Autoimmune Liver Disease Diagnosis Sentences Patients to Stigma

-Patient Organization Calling for Global Name Change of Disease-

LIGHTNING RELEASES: Pearland, TX (9/24/2014)- The PBCers Organization today called for a global name change of the chronic liver disease, Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC) to Primary Biliary Cholangitis. While cirrhosis is largely associated with alcoholism, PBC is not caused by alcohol or substance abuse. Yet, those affected by the disease deal with the stigma of cirrhosis- even by some medical professionals. The PBCers Organization is partnering with the PBC Foundation UK and other groups around the world on this initiative.

Global survey results were released at this summer’s 12^th Annual PBC Conference and show that the majority of PBC patients and health care professionals are unhappy with the word cirrhosis in the name of the disease (81%) and want the name changed (87%).

“When I was first diagnosed with PBC, I overheard two nurses commenting that I didn’t look like an alcoholic. That’s because I’m not,” said Linie Moore, Founder and President of the PBCers Organization. “It’s hard enough being diagnosed with an auto-immune disease but to also be accused of being an alcoholic is devastating.”

“There is a widespread misunderstanding about PBC and a need for greater awareness,” said John M. Vierling, MD, FACP, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. “Since cirrhosis occurs only in the late stage of PBC, the name primary biliary cirrhosis is actually a misnomer for patients in the earlier stages of the illness. The more technically correct and ponderous term for PBC is chronic non-suppurative destructive cholangitis.”

He added, “A name change to primary biliary cholangitis would retain the abbreviation PBC and better serve patients and the medical community worldwide.”

Along with Vierling, other top liver specialists leading the charge on the name change include Robert Gish, MD; M. Eric Gershwin, MD, MACR, MACP; Keith Lindor, MD; Carlo Selmi, MD; Christopher Bowlus, MD; and Kris Kowdley, MD.

Women are affected 10 times more than men, and PBC is usually diagnosed in patients between the ages of 35 to 60 years. Those with PBC usually look extremely healthy, and many are 10 to 30 pounds overweight. The outward appearance doesn’t tell the story of what is going on inside their bodies.

While there is no cure for PBC, several pharmaceutical companies are working to develop new treatments for PBC.

The global survey was conducted online consisting of nearly 1,000 PBC patients and health care professionals by The PBC Foundation UK.

Justice John Major had chaired the Air India Kanishka Commission and had travelled to India, with Bajwa. ” Justice John Major is the right man to advise us at this point , including the Premier of British Columbia and federal Justice Minister Peter Mckay in Ottawa and our country Canada”, said Bajwa. We should institute a “Commission Advisory for Parole Board”, of retired Judges of British Columbia and Supreme court of Canada, said June Gill, of “Take Back of Surrey”, a protest planned here in Surrey, this weekend.

Why Do Almost Half of Women Suffer From Adult Acne ?

LIGHTNING RELEASES 09/22/14 A study conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital found that 45per cent of women in their 20s are seriously affected by pimples. Almost half of U.S. woman aged between 21 and 30 suffer from clinical acne, the new study showed.

But this huge figure is more positive than the one determined by the University of Alabama in 2006. In that year the university’s findings stated that 50.9per cent of women in their 20s experience post-adolescent acne.

This positive reduction could very well be in part due to new treatment therapies that have come onto the market since 2006. One such program, advocated by many leading Dermatologists, is a treatment regime out of Australia called 28 Days to Clear Skin.

Leading dermatologist, Dr. Penny Adams, says this particular program is one of the better new programs around and is particularly suited to women above 20.

“There are several alternative new systems for use in treating acne”, say Dr Adams, “ but what I particularly like about this program is the way the system works so fast, virtually providing my clients with regenerated healthy skin in a 28 day period.”

28 Days to Clear Skin is a kit containing 4 different products, and while technically it is promoted for both male and females of all ages, Dr Adams says that in her opinion it suits more mature woman aged (20+) for one very obvious reason.

“The product really does work, but it certainly can be a bit daunting to use in the first 4-5 days when some redness appears and the cleanser tends to expose all the tiny Mila (small white pimples) hidden under the top layers of skin. This tends to turn off the young teenagers who don’t have the mental toughness to push through that first 4 day barrier.” she says.

“But almost 100% of my clients have had great results and they never look back once they get onto the product. I would thoroughly recommend it.”

Dr Adams says laser therapy is also popular with some of her clients but this also entails several days of reddening and the cost is not always in reach for some.

The new study also found that 26% of women aged 31 to 40 get pimples (not acne) and 12% of women aged 41 to 50 do also. While no single definitive cause has been determined, medical experts believe that among other things, adult acne can be partially attributed to a person’s diet.

Dr Jeanine Downie, a dermatologist from Montclair, New Jersey, says “Whenever hormones surge – around your period, when you’re pregnant, when you start or stop the Pill, and, yes, when you’re stressed or eat hormone-enhanced foods, i.e. non organic meat and dairy – skin changes can occur.”

Hormones can overstimulate a person’s oil glands which then results in the output of extra sebum, the oil that causes pimples. So a balanced diet, containing lean protein along with green leafy vegetables, high fibre cereals and plenty of fruits can go a long way to assisting with good skin. The old maxim to drink lots of water still holds true and the addition of a regime such as the 28 Days to Clear Skin program seems like it is becoming ever more popular.
