Rivada Networks Awarded Patent for Telecom Commodity Exchange

LIGHTNING RELEASES: New York (4/9/2014)– Rivada Networks announced today that the U.S. Patent Office has allowed its patent covering the creation of an electronic commodity exchange for trading wireless bandwidth.

The patented technology will allow wireless network operators and other qualified bidders to buy and sell wireless broadband capacity in real time, in units of time and space small enough to meet the needs of network operators and customers alike.

“Wireless spectrum is a scarce, valuable resource that can’t be stored, and we’re not making any more of it,” said Rivada CEO Declan Ganley. “As demand for wireless broadband continues its explosive growth, now more than ever we need a system for matching that demand with available supply.”

Rivada’s patented Telecom Commodity Exchange is a system for buying and selling available wireless capacity, and then communicating the result of those transactions out to the edge of the network. There, at the level of a single wireless cell site, the wireless capacity is then handed off to the buyer from the seller.

The whole process works in concert with Rivada’s previously patented Dynamic Spectrum Arbitrage – Tiered Priority Access technology. DSATPA makes possible the re-assignment of wireless-network resources at a very local level, and for short periods of time if desired, making possible a previously unthinkable level of flexibility to the allocation of wireless bandwidth.

“Others have dreamed of commoditizing wireless bandwidth in the past,” Ganley said. “But now Rivada’s world-class engineers have developed the technology to actually do it for the first time. This will change how wireless bandwidth changes hands forever.”

Rivada Networks’ Chief Technical Officer Clint Smith explained how DSATPA and the telecom commodity exchange fit together: “You need DSA to segment the capacity into units that can be bought and sold in real time, while the exchange provides the venue for that buying and selling to take place. You need both, and you need them to talk to each other, to create a genuine market in wireless bandwidth.”

The program, Gift1 by Powernet, aims to put tablet technology in the hands of those who can benefit most by it.

Donations to organizations through Gift1 work like this: A customer purchases a tablet priced at $150 or more from the Gift1 website. After checkout, the customer chooses which organization from a list of “favored recipients” they want to donate a tablet to. The selected organization will then receive a 7-inch tablet courtesy of the customer and Gift1.

The current list of Gift1 favored recipients features Appalachian Children’s Home, The Dragonfly Foundation, Miracle Children’s Home (located in Kadali, India) and the Cincinnati Ronald McDonald House.

“When Powernet approached us about participating in Gift1, we immediately recognized the opportunities the program would provide for the kids and young adults we support,” said Brandon Davidson, Community Relations and Events Manager at Dragonfly. “A lot of our Dragonflies are currently going through treatment, and often face extended hospital stays. It’s an excitement Stevens shares.
