FTHO/CAMM Gala Celebrates U.S.-China Ties by Honoring Flying Tiger Heroes and Families at the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C.

A gala was held at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Washington, D.C. honoring both American and Chinese veterans of the heroic Flying Tigers led by General Claire Lee Chennault. The Flying Tigers, American pilots who fought alongside the Chinese against Japanese forces during World War II, are one of the oldest examples of successful Sino-U.S. cooperation.


The event was organized by the Flying Tigers Historical Organization (FTHO) and the Chennault Aviation & Military Museum (CAMM), two non-profit organizations that work to promote awareness about the story of the Flying Tigers and foster closer ties between the U.S. and China.


FTHO Chairman, Major General James Whitehead, Larry Jobe, President of FTHO and Nell Calloway, Director of CAMM and granddaughter of General Chennault, presented special commemorative awards to Anna Chennault, the wife of General Chennault, and Catherine Stevens, the wife of former U.S. Senator Ted Stevens, a former Flying Tiger pilot. In addition, several Flying Tiger veterans received service awards, including Frank Losonsky, Paul Crawford and Jerry Yellin.


Major General Whitehead said, “The Flying Tiger Historical Organization in partnership with the Chennault Aviation & Military Museum are grateful for the reception being held in our honor at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China. It is through events such as this that we will continue to build on a past special relationship between the Chinese and American people for a better understanding in the future.”


Several of the FTHO’s initiatives to strengthen Sino-U.S. ties were highlighted at the event, including a joint venture to build the Flying Tiger Heritage Park in Guilin, China, which is set to open in March, 2015. The Park is being built on a 123-acre site on the former Yang Tang airfield and includes the original command cave used by General Claire Chennault between 1941 and 1945 as his Operations Center.


Donors who recently gave donations to either FTHO or CAMM include Northrop Grumman, Chinese internet giant Sohu.com, Hezhan Group and Chinese-New Zealand artist Jun Cao, who donated two limited-edition prints of his most well-known brushstroke work featuring tigers, “Mission from Heaven”.


Also in attendance were Chinese Ambassador Cui Tiankai, Cynthia Chennault, FTHO Vice President K.C. Ma, FTHO Director Michael F. Bianco, U. S. Senator David Vitter and U.S. Representative Joe Wilson, son of a Flying Tiger veteran.


American actress Kerry Berry Brogan flew in on leave-of-absence from the filming of her current film “Old Boy” to show her support for the FTHO, attending the gala in a self-designed red dress embellished with original Flying Tiger squadron patches from WWII. The organization appointed Brogan as the Flying Tigers Goodwill Ambassador in July, 2012 in efforts to raise awareness amongst youth of the Flying Tigers’ legacy. Fluent in Mandarin, Brogan is presently based in Beijing and has appeared in more than 60 Chinese films and television series in a wide variety of dramatic, comedic, starring and supporting roles. Off-screen, she is well known for her work in promoting better Sino-American cultural understanding.

Termite NASCAR Coming to the Austin Insect Rodeo Expo

Termite NASCAR is just one of many activities for children at the Austin Insect Rodeo Expo, a FREE event at the Bullock Texas State History Museum on Saturday, November 9, 2013 from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM.


This free educational event will reinforce students’ science skills with hands-on activities, and it will allow students to enjoy opportunities to interact with professional insect scientists as they participate in a wide variety of presentations and activities designed to educate people about the most numerous, widespread, and diverse group of organisms on earth: Insects!


Hosted by the Entomological Foundation and the Entomological Society of America, the Austin Insect Rodeo Expo will feature Maggot Art, an Insect Petting Zoo, a Pollination Station, Honey Tasting, an Insect Cafe, Termite NASCAR, games, prizes, crafts, and more.


In addition, kids can see “Flight of the Butterflies” in 3-D at the museum’s IMAX theater.


“We look forward to the opportunity to develop children’s interest in science and the fascinating world of insects,” said Dr. Tom Green, President of the Entomological Foundation. “The Bullock Texas State History Museum is a great venue for Insect Rodeo, and we hope to meet a lot of people there.”


Dozens of entomologists, in town for the Annual Meeting of the Entomological Society of America, have volunteered to help at the Insect Rodeo.

October 2013, Norwell MA, Lower-Level Laser Therapy and Its Use in the Clinical Settibg

Physical therapists are experienced in treating a multitude of conditions, most of which involve dealing with inflammation. Inflammation occurs when the body has been damaged in some way, whether through injury or disease. As a result, the body produces a protective response, in the form of inflammation, to remove damaged cells or pathogens. Familiar symptoms of inflammation include redness, swelling, heat, and pain. These symptoms occur as a result of a physiological process in which specific inflammatory cells rush to the site of the injury to aid in protecting the disrupted tissue. Inflammation is necessary for tissue healing, however, in some cases it can become chronic, lasting for several months or even years. In physical therapy, several modalities are used to help expedite the inflammatory process and promote better recovery. Low-level laser therapy, also known as cold laser, is one such modality used for treating both acute and chronic inflammation.


When a tissue is first injured, the body immediately produces an inflammatory response which consists of three major steps. First, blood vessels that supply the injured region dilate, allowing for an increase in blood flow to the damaged tissue. In addition, capillaries become more permeable to allow for proteins and fluids to move more freely between the tissues. This increased blood flow carries white blood cells to the area to aid in protecting the injured area. Again, this process is necessary and beneficial but can also be painful and limiting as the increased blood flow causes redness and the influx of inflammatory cells causes swelling. Swelling is often what causes pain, as it irritates the sensitive nerve endings that carry pain signals to the brain. In some cases, inflammation resolves quickly without much intervention, but in other cases it may last longer and be more functionally limiting, especially when pain level is moderate to severe.


Patients presenting to physical therapy often have some level of pain and functional limitation that has prompted them to seek treatment. In most cases, the patient has tried to manage the symptoms independently but has not been successful. Low-level laser therapy is one of the many modalities a physical therapist can offer to help a patient move away from inflammation and pain to being healthy, well, and back to prior

functional level. Low-level laser therapy uses light to alter cellular function. While the exact mechanism of laser therapy is still unclear, studies have shown that light energy is effective in lowering the levels of inflammatory cells and chemicals, as well as stimulating cellular mitochondria which increases cellular metabolism. In simpler terms, inflammation is eliminated more quickly and on a deeper level, allowing the patient to gain mobility and pain relief faster.


Patients receiving cold laser treatment do not feel any pain during the treatment, and in some cases, notice improvement in symptoms relatively quickly. When combined with manual therapy and therapeutic exercise, laser treatment is very effective in treating a multitude of conditions such as osteoarthritis, tendinitis, lower back injury, and chronic pain. While cold laser therapy is relatively safe, there are some cases in which laser should not be used. Such instances include during the first trimester of pregnancy, over cancerous growths, over growth plates in children, over the thyroid gland, and for patients with epileptic seizures or pacemakers.


Research is constantly being conducted to determine the optimal dosage and frequency of cold laser treatment in physical therapy. At this time, there are therapeutic ranges for dose and frequency that the physical therapist will follow based on the patient’s condition. As previously mentioned, patients find this treatment fast, easy, and painfree. Low-level laser therapy is an effective way to reduce inflammation and pain while decreasing reliance on medication, thus promoting better health and wellness. For patients seeking conservative management of inflammatory conditions, low-level laser therapy is an excellent way to address these injuries, allowing for a safe return to prior level of function.

KANSAS CITY, MO-PocketCake has announced the release of ArrowFlick, a one-finger archery game for iOS and Android devices.




ArrowFlick is a highly visceral entertainment in which players fling arrows at standing targets and such animals as deer, rabbits, crocodiles, lions, rhinos and bears. For each round, players are given five arrows and awarded points and special achievements (there are 93 for iOS and 179 for Android) for hits, kill shots, bull’s eyes, headshots, tricks (such as plucking fruit off the stem), even misses. If players stray too much from the mark, they can earn such achievements as stumblebum, klutz or spazoid. Ace their marks, however, and they may be deemed the next Robin Hood.




ArrowFlick includes three game modes (easy, normal, high wind challenge), each with 50 rounds. With each advancing round or game mode, the winds become stronger, the animals’ kill zones smaller and their tendency to get spooked greater. Steadiness is harder and harder to maintain.




Aiding players in their challenge is a musical score that’s heavy on silly sound effects and nature sounds – birds singing, winds moaning, animals shuffling across the landscape. Players can hear the tautness of the string as its pulled back, the twang of the arrow’s release and the thud when it strikes its target. When an animal is killed, it cries with agony. Every headshot to a standing target is accompanied with a bloodcurdling yowl.




ArrowFlick includes three easy rounds and three normal rounds for free. A full version of the game costs $.99.




PocketCake’s first game, LavaCat which launched on Android in late July and iOS, Facebook and Ouya in late September has been downloaded nearly 100,000 times. It is the first mobile game allowing players to rewind time.

There are about 5,000 Animal Shelters and Rescue organizations in the United States caring for over 5,000,000 cats, dogs and other animals. Most struggle to obtain the resources they need to care, feed and shelter the animals in their care.

From start to finish, Famularo doesn’t simply supplement a cookbook with interesting stories or offer recipes here and there to satisfy a foodie craving; he carefully combines ingredients of family memories and deeply felt moments, folding in an equal measure of food culture and passion. The result is not gimmicky or disjointed, but a complete joy to experience.


It would be difficult to read Crazy for Italian Food exclusively as a memoir or cookbook. The two elements are so perfectly married in unexpected ways. An Italian cooking expert, Famularo does not disappoint with his recipes. Not shying away from some of the major issues of growing up as an immigrant gives Famularo’s stories real grit, and rewarding his readers with a compendium of tried-and-true recipes is a wonderfully generous idea. “Perdutamente” means “crazy” or “passionate” in Italian. Famularo embodies this concept when it comes to food and family. His book, like a family album, is an absolute treasure and will likely inspire future generations to appreciate their own traditions and recipes and create some new ones.

Startup Runs Over Hi-Tech Battery
